Feature Friday #1

Hey everyone! I am so excited to finally introduce to you, Feature Friday. These posts will feature some of my favorite books of all time. I will be giving you all a little sneak peek into the book and also recommending it to you all. I’ve been wanting to do recommendations for awhile now but I’ve never wanted to make a whole recommendations post. So, I settled with a weekly non-spoilery review type of post. I hope you all like this idea as much as I do.

Now, if you’ve been following my blog for awhile, you could probably guess what the first recommendation will be but, if you haven’t been here that long, the first book is….

Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout!

obsidianThis book follows Katy Swartz just after she moves from Florida to a small, unincorporated town near West Virginia’s Seneca Mountains. She never wanted to make the big move but finally agreed after she saw how much her mother was struggling with the loss of Katy’s father. And wow it was such a good decision for them to make the move! They ended up moving into a house right beside Daemon Black and his sister. They are stunning aliens who are hiding from their enemies. Katy befriends Dee but has quite the odd connection with Daemon. She likes him but also dislikes him at the same time. Unsure thoughts can sometimes end in love right? Katy and Daemon’s story is a must read for all readers! (well non-readers too but readers will enjoy it more)

You will definitely fall head over heels for Daemon Black. He is basically the definition of swoon-worthy fictional characters. The green eyed, tousled obsidian hair alien is one that you definitely won’t want to miss reading about.

This book is a book that lots of book bloggers can relate to. It’s not the rarest thing but, it is pretty rare to find a character that  LOVES to read in a paranormal/science fiction book. It is even rarer to find a book blogger in a paranormal book. But here you do! This book has inspired many avid readers to blog (like Katy) about their love for books (me included). So, I definitely recommend that you pick up this book just because, or even if you’re interested in blogging.

That’s all I have for today! I can’t wait to write up next week’s Feature Friday but until next time, happy reading! ~Alaina

Teaser Tuesday #10

Hey, look who remembered to post her Teaser Tuesday this week?! Meeee! I didn’t have a whole lot of homework tonight so I found a bit of time to blog! Also, I hope you all enjoyed reading through my new fall blogging schedule. I’m very excited for it and can’t wait to start my first Feature Friday post! If you have not seen my new schedule, please refer back to THIS post. Now without further ado, lets get straight into my favorite post of the week!

“The three High Witches were seated in makeshift thrones, little more than ornate chairs they’d found. The Blueblood Matron smiled as Manon pressed two fingers to her brow. The Yellowlegs Matron, on the other end, did nothing. But her grandmother, seated in the center, smiled faintly.” ~Heir of Fire, Sarah J. Maas

So I am currently trooping through the last 20 pages of Heir of Fire. It’s been such a good hofbook and I definitely cannot wait to get a blog post up about it. I’ve been enjoying everything about this book! But sadly, all books have to end. But luckily, I already own a copy of Queen Of Shadows so I will be diving straight into that!

If you have not read Heir of Fire, don’t worry. The excerpt I picked from the book is totally spoil free. The chapter that I was on during this week’s Teaser Tuesday was a Manon Blackbeak chapter. She hasn’t been my favorite character throughout this whole book (because Rowaelin slays) but she’s still a pretty cool character!

So that is all for today. I will hopefully be able to get more blog posts up later this week but for now, Happy Reading! ~Alaina

Fall 2016 Blogging Schedule

I’m one of those people in the world who loves to keep everything on a schedule. I like to always know when I need to get a post up so that I don’t forget! Sooo, I’ve decided to make a little schedule for my posts from now until the end of the year. It’s nothing too complex. Just a few segment posts a week. But, now that I am making a schedule, I am super determined to not forget to post. Well, I will probably forget by next week but, at least I am trying to remember! Let’s just hope that my Teaser Tuesdays will be staying up to date.

So, basically I’ve separated each week into three segment posts and four days of whatever (aka tags, reviews, etc.). It shouldn’t be too hard! Tuesday, Friday and Saturday will be my segment days each week, leaving Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday for reviews and tags.

So here’s my newly redone schedule:

Monday: Nothing

Tuesday: Teaser Tuesday

Wednesday: Nothing

Thursday: Nothing

Friday: Feature Friday

Saturday: Current Reads

Sunday: Nothing

** The day that it says “nothing” does not mean that I won’t be posting. It’s just the days that I do not have a specific post scheduled**

Now, you may be thinking, what happens on these segmented days? Well let me tell you:

Teaser Tuesday:

Teaser Tuesday is one of the most popular book segment on blogs. Basically, you flip to either the page you’re on, a page near the page you’re on or a random page from the book you are currently reading. Then you find a non-spoilery excerpt and post it in a Teaser Tuesday post. These posts give viewers the chance to view the types of book you like reading!

Feature Friday:

This segment is a newbie to my blog! This past week, I’ve been thinking of starting a segment where I feature and recommend some of my favorite books. And here it is! Every Friday I will be picking my one of my favorite books and featuring it in a whole blog post!

Current Reads:

This one is quite self-explanatory. Every Saturday I will be talking about what book(s) I am currently reading. I used to do this back when I started blogging but stopped for some reason. So here it is again!

I hope you all will enjoy my new schedule! Hopefully I will be able to keep up with it.

Happy Reading, Alaina xoxo

Review: Onyx by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Hey everyone! I haven’t been blogging that much lately because of school but, today I’ve found quite a bit of time to draft some posts! I’ve missed blogging so much this past week. But, now I’m back and I have so many reviews, tags and segment posts I want to do! So, before I go all in depth with my absence, let’s just dive straight into this review.

Onyx (Lux, #2)Information:

Title/Author: Onyx by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Series: Lux (#2)

Publisher: Entangled Teen

Release Date: August 14, 2012

ISBN: 9781620610114

Synopsis:

Being connected to Daemon Black sucks…

Thanks to his alien mojo, Daemon’s determined to prove what he feels for me is more than a product of our bizarro connection. So I’ve sworn him off, even though he’s running more hot than cold these days. But we’ve got bigger problems.

Something worse than the Arum has come to town…

The Department of Defense are here. If they ever find out what Daemon can do and that we’re linked, I’m a goner. So is he. And there’s this new boy in school who’s got a secret of his own. He knows what’s happened to me and he can help, but to do so, I have to lie to Daemon and stay away from him. Like that’s possible. Against all common sense, I’m falling for Daemon. Hard.

But then everything changes…

I’ve seen someone who shouldn’t be alive. And I have to tell Daemon, even though I know he’s never going to stop searching until he gets the truth. What happened to his brother? Who betrayed him? And what does the DOD want from them—from me?

No one is who they seem. And not everyone will survive the lies…

My Thoughts:

What can I say, Jennifer L. Armentrout has astonished me again. Her writing flows so beautifully and comes together to create a brand spanking new masterpiece every time. I absolutely loved how Jennifer pieced together each part of the story. There is always a problem that somehow becomes resolved by the end of each novel (well except for Opal and Origin). Unlike most YA series where there’s always cliff-hangers at the end of the sequels so we all get to suffer for a good year for the next book to come out. But, Jennifer’s books aren’t like regular YA novels. She brings the characters completely off the page and lets us create a vision of what is happening in the book. The Lux series takes you into the world of luxen and arum. A world that could never be recreated.

This past summer was my second time reading through this novel and somehow I liked it better than the first time I read it! I flew straight through this book and enjoyed every minute of it. The first time I read it, I think I was just a bit too frustrated with Blake and Vaughn. But, I guess over time I kind of warmed up to the two of them.

I absolutely loved how Jennifer started this novel. She didn’t jump ahead too far from the first book. We started off with Daemon and Katy, in class, with that little, nasty pen. It was the perfect starting point for the novel. And the rest of the novel is history since I don’t want to spoil anything….. actually, I’m not done yet.

One of my favorite things about this novel was that we got introduced to soooooo many new characters! Of course, I’ve already mentioned Blake. He “was” the super swoon-worthy, surfer and blogger from Santa Monica. I was actually lightening up to him at first in this novel but things changed further through. We also got introduced to Bethany, the girl who was featured on the missing person signs around town. And, we also got introduced to Will, a psychopathic guy who finds ways to hook up with woman so that her daughter’s boyfriend can mutate him to cure his cancer. That sounds about right. We also got to know Vaughn, Nancy Husher, Carissa and Lesa bit better.

Now, can I just tell all of you how much I love Daemon Black. He spent so much time trying to show Katy how much he loved her even after being turned down. He never gave up. That’s some serious desperation but also some cute romance.

5/5 stars

Review: Shadows by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Hey guys! I am so dearly sorry for being MIA the last couple of days. I started school earlier this week and although I haven’t been loaded with homework, I just am never in the mood to blog. But alas, I am here now and am soooo ready to write up one of my many reviews that I have to do! So, today I will be reviewing Shadows by Jennifer L. Armentrout, which is a novella that goes with Lux series. I was going to write all of my Lux reviews in chronological order but, I totally failed. So we’re just going to go with how it is now…..

{*Disclaimer* there will be miner spoilers in this.}

Synopsis:

Shadows (Lux, #0.5)The last thing Dawson Black expected was Bethany Williams. As a Luxen, an alien life form on Earth, human girls are…well, fun. But since the Luxen have to keep their true identities a secret, falling for one would be insane.

Dangerous. Tempting. Undeniable.

Bethany can’t deny the immediate connection between her and Dawson. And even though boys aren’t a complication she wants, she can’t stay away from him. Still, whenever they lock eyes, she’s drawn in.

Captivated. Lured. Loved.

Dawson is keeping a secret that will change her existence…and put her life in jeopardy. But even he can’t stop risking everything for one human girl. Or from a fate that is as unavoidable as love itself.

My Thoughts:

If you couldn’t tell from the synopsis, Shadows follows both Bethany and Dawson’s perspective instead of Daemon and Katy’s. It’s really nice to read a novella about my two favorite minor characters from Lux for a change. Even though I will always and forever love Katy and Daemon’s story, Bethany and Dawson’s is for sure on my top ten favorite fictional romance list.

Basically, Shadows picks up two years before Katy arrives to Ketterman. But this time, it follows the lives of Bethany Williams and Dawson Black as they fall deeply and dangerously in love. Dawson’s inhuman and shouldn’t be falling in love with someone other than his kind. But he couldn’t help it the moment his eyes locked with Bethany’s. The two of them tried their best to keep their romance a secret but, it’s basically impossible when Daemon Black is Dawson’s “older” brother.

Characters:

I fell so deeply in love with these two characters that I never wanted the story to end. Of course, all Lux fans already know that Dawson is the beautiful, vibrant green eyed twin to Daemon Black, but we never really got a full out description of Bethany in Opal or Origin. Well let me tell you, I totally wish I looked like her. She is said to have beautiful, brown hair, a thin build and an elfin face. Doesn’t that just sound like the prettiest thing ever? I sure think so! Now, aside from their appearances, we also got to view a lot of their personalities. Since we didn’t actually meet Dawson and Bethany until Opal and Origin, we didn’t get any time to get to know them. But, since Shadows actually follows their perspectives, you get to know EVERYTHING about them! Bethany was definitely my favorite out of the two main characters in Shadows since I could relate to her more. She is very artistic, kind and loves to help people! She was basically the definition of that super nice kid you always find at a school. And, I almost forgot to mention that she has mad painting skills. I absolutely love painting and would die to have skills as good as hers!

Now, now, I couldn’t forget about Mr. Dawson Black could I? He is part 2 of the swoon worthy Black brothers! The thing that I loved about him was how much he expressed his feelings for Bethany. He proved to all of his kind that he would die to keep her safe. Once he laid eyes on her, he knew that he wouldn’t resist so he followed his heart to Bethany. Although they didn’t have an amazing teenage life together (as mentioned in Opal, Origin and Opposition) their love was neverending. They were perfect for each other and NO ONE could beg to differ. Aside from his undeniable chemistry with Beth, I also really liked just reading about him at home. I loved the fact that he would spend time with his brother watching marathons of Ghost Investigators and use up his sleeping hours talking on the phone with Beth. That just shows a genuine romance.

All of the other characters are waaaay different in Shadows then they were in Obsidian. Daemon was very protective and always in a bad mood, alike the version of him we saw at the beginning of the series. At least he loosened up into a kind version of the protective man he was in Shadows. Dee was the exact same: bubbly, charismatic and super friendly. I really wish I could tell y’all that Andrew and Ash were nicer in Shadows but I would be totally lying. They were the exact same as we saw them in the other books: angry and dark. But somehow Adam was born totally different from his twins. He was also shown the exact same as he was in Obsidian. So most of the characters different change from the first time we saw them in Shadows to the first point we saw them in Obsidian. The ending of Shadows may’ve affected them slightly but they never showed it.

Plot:

I absolutely adored every moment of this book! Jennifer is such an amazing writer that you would have to dig through the entire book for a flaw. So with that said, I don’t think I actually have to put my thoughts into sentences soooo, let me just pick a few words that would describe it best. hmmmm. AMAZING! FLAWLESS! AWESOMESAUCE! SWOONWORTHY! ABILITY TO PUT YOU INTO A BOOK SLUMP FROM LOVE OF LUX SERIES. Okay, that last one was a sentence but it is totally true! I read this book about a month ago and I can still remember almost every part of the book clearly. When you are able to do that with a book, you know it was amazing. I for sure loved certain parts more than others (hint** that reveal scene) but nothing was bad about the scenes I liked a little less. I really don’t want to spoil this book for people who haven’t read it yet because it is so amazing so I’ll just shut up now.

If you haven’t read the Lux series, I highly suggest you do so. They’re such amazing reads. And if you can’t quite figure out when to read Shadows, I highly suggest reading it after Opposition the first time you read it. If you decide to give the series a reread,  try reading Shadows first! I find that both ways work out really good. if you have any thoughts to share about Shadows, be sure to comment them. I would love to hear all of your thoughts!

Happy Reading,

~Alaina

Teaser Tuesday #10

Hey everyone! I’m back and once again doing an almost forgotten Teaser Tuesday post! For some odd reason I always forget about these. But luckily, it’s still Tuesday so I can still post it! Now today’s Teaser Tuesday was a bit hard t0 do since I’d just finished a book and hadn’t picked any others up yet! So, I went back into the book I was reading and dug around for a quote from the book. And I think I found the perfect one to share today!

For those who haven’t been here for my past Teaser Tuesdays, don’t fret. They are basically the simplest posts ever. Basically, I pick a few lines from my current read and post them in a post so that everyone can have a little taste of the books I read!

So, for today’s post, I picked….

He came closer, stopping in front of me. He knelt down, his eyes shining. “I remember. I said ‘The most beautiful people, ones whose beauty is only rivaled by what is inside of them, are the ones who are quietly unaware of it.’ Or something like that.

Isn’t it just such a beautiful and inspiring quote?!

oppositionThis quote was from Opposition by Jennifer L. Armentrout. I recently reread the whole series and finally finished Opposition earlier today. The series is amazing and I definitely recommend all of you readers go and read it! If you like aliens, paranormal stuff, romance and lots of fighting, this book is perfect for you!

Thank you so much for reading this week’s Teaser Tuesday! Hopefully I will remember to get next week’s up on time! Let’s pray that Alaina’s forgetful brain won’t forget about a blog post! Until my next time, happy reading! ~Alaina

Guess What: I’m In A Book Club?!

196693

Hey everyone! Today I wanted to briefly talk about the book club that me and some of my internet friends have started. I’ve always wanted to be in a book club and do little monthly read-alongs with people but have never come to do it. So, when Alex (from readersgonnaread) asked me if I wanted to start one with her, I couldn’t say no! Now, me, Alex and our friend Emily (from whogavethewrite) have started Book Bomb Reads. Below I will be talking about our book club and September’s Book of The Month!

What is a Book Club:

I thought I’d add this in here since it’s a frequently asked question. Basically, a book club is simply a group of people who read and discuss a book during a certain period of time. Ours is going to be monthly and we will be doing discussions of our book of the month and updating on our goodreads page and Instagram page frequently! I hope that cleared up the question for anyone who didn’t know!

How Did Book Bomb Reads come to be?

So as I said above, Alex came up with the idea. We stayed up pretty late using Instagram direct message to plan the whole book club and then the next day we asked Emily if she wanted to join. And of course she was very quick to say yes! So then we started an Instagram and a Goodreads page for the book club and voila! We became a running book club.

How’d we come up with the name?

It’s quite obvious I think. Books are the bomb so we took that into mind when we named the club and worked it into the name. So anyone who doesn’t think that books are the bomb isn’t allowed to join. Sorry but that’s how it has to be.

What types of books will we be reading?

We will mostly be reading YA novels with the exception of maybe an odd middle grade or NA novel. We will be reading books from all sorts of genres so be prepared for any type of book.!

September’s Book of The Month:

After some hard decisions and trying to find a book that Alex hadn’t already read, we settled on Rebel Belle by Rachel Hawkins. It is a paranormal/thriller that follows Harper Price as her life totally changes. Below will be the Goodreads synopsis so you can get to know the book and become interested in it:

Rebel Belle (Rebel Belle, #1)Harper Price, peerless Southern belle, was born ready for a Homecoming tiara. But after a strange run-in at the dance imbues her with incredible abilities, Harper’s destiny takes a turn for the seriously weird. She becomes a Paladin, one of an ancient line of guardians with agility, super strength and lethal fighting instincts.

Just when life can’t get any more disastrously crazy, Harper finds out who she’s charged to protect: David Stark, school reporter, subject of a mysterious prophecy and possibly Harper’s least favorite person. But things get complicated when Harper starts falling for him—and discovers that David’s own fate could very well be to destroy Earth.

Until next time, Happy Reading

September TBR! [2016]

Hey everyone! August has come to an end *sigh* which means we get to welcome September and everything that comes with it! The leaves are already starting to fall where I live and the temperatures are slowly getting colder. But, September doesn’t only bring the start of fall, it also brings a new TBR. I still have quite a few books that I want to get to so this month is going to be pretty hefty! Most of the books I have picked to read are over 500 pages which isn’t going to be an easy task but I think I can do it! So before I keep ranting about how much I will struggle with my massive September TBR, let’s get into what books I’ll be reading:

(In the title of every book, I will be linking the Goodreads page so if you haven’t read the book you can check out the synopsis. I will also be linking a few stores where you can buy the book.)

Origin by Jennifer L. Armentrout:

Origin (Lux, #4)This book is so amazing! I am currently in the middle of rereading it and it is just such an awesome book. Basically, in this fourth installment of the Lux series, Katy and Daemon are stuck in Area 51 and get help from an unlikely person. It’s so cool that Jennifer takes us deep into the levels of Area 51 for this novel. And, as usual, we get to meet some new characters. Archer is the newest character in the series and he’s definitely a way better person than Blake! I’m so excited to finish this book either today or tomorrow and move on to the fifth and final book of the series: Opposition. If you haven’t read anything by Jennifer L. Armentrout, I highly suggest you start by reading the first book in the Lux series, Obsidian and then making your way to this amazing book!

Buy The Book: B&N | Chapters | Amazon | Book Depository

Opposition by Jennifer L. Armentrout:

Opposition (Lux, #5)Yes, this is another reread that I can’t wait to get to. I already know what happens in the end but I love this series so much that I just can’t wait to read this one. So, in the fifth and final installment of the Lux series Luxen come and attack and Katy, Daemon and the rest of the crew are left to fend for themselves. And things become a little trickier when they find out that a certain little Origin is on their way. Definitely click the title to be taken to the Goodreads page for a better synopsis!

When I read this book last year, I remember it being quite confusing at first but I already know it’s going to be as awesome as last time. None of the other books in my reread of the series have disappointed me so why would this one?

Buy The Book: B&N | Chapters | Amazon | Book Depository

Rebel Belle by Rachel Hawkins:

I actually bought this one online right before I started writing this post and I can’t wait to read it. Me and two of my friends (Alex from readersgonnaread and Emily from whogavethewrite) have started a book club called “Book Bomb Reads” and this is September’s book of the month! And it’s paranormal so of course I can’t wait to read and devour the whole book. I don’t actually know what the book’s about yet so here’s the Goodreads synopsis:

With snappy banter, cotillion dresses, non-stop action and a touch of magic, this new young adult series from bestseller Rachel Hawkins is going to make y’all beg for more.

City of Lost Souls by Cassandra Clare:

I am finally getting back into The Mortal Instruments. It’s been a couple of months since I read City of Fallen Angels and I just can’t wait any longer to get back into this amazing fictional world! So, since I don’t know too much about this book I will be putting the Goodreads synopsis below!

City of Lost Souls (The Mortal Instruments, #5)The New York Times bestselling Mortal Instruments continues—and so do the thrills and danger for Jace, Clary, and Simon.

What price is too high to pay, even for love? When Jace and Clary meet again, Clary is horrified to discover that the demon Lilith’s magic has bound her beloved Jace together with her evil brother Sebastian, and that Jace has become a servant of evil. The Clave is out to destroy Sebastian, but there is no way to harm one boy without destroying the other. As Alec, Magnus, Simon, and Isabelle wheedle and bargain with Seelies, demons, and the merciless Iron Sisters to try to save Jace, Clary plays a dangerous game of her own. The price of losing is not just her own life, but Jace’s soul. She’s willing to do anything for Jace, but can she still trust him? Or is he truly lost?

Love. Blood. Betrayal. Revenge. Darkness threatens to claim the Shadowhunters in the harrowing fifth book of the Mortal Instruments series.

Buy The Book: B&N | Chapters | Amazon | Book Depository

City of Heavenly Fire by Cassandra Clare:

Now, how would I know anything about this book if I didn’t even know what City of Lost Souls was about so of course I will be putting the Goodreads synopsis down below. But I do know somethings about this final edition of The Mortal Instruments. A lot of stuff is going down the hole.

City of Heavenly Fire (The Mortal Instruments, #6)In this dazzling and long-awaited conclusion to the acclaimed Mortal Instruments series, Clary and her friends fight the greatest evil they have ever faced: Clary’s own brother.

Sebastian Morgenstern is on the move, systematically turning Shadowhunter against Shadowhunter. Bearing the Infernal Cup, he transforms Shadowhunters into creatures out of nightmare, tearing apart families and lovers as the ranks of his Endarkened army swell.

The embattled Shadowhunters withdraw to Idris – but not even the famed demon towers of Alicante can keep Sebastian at bay. And with the Nephilim trapped in Idris, who will guard the world against demons?

When one of the greatest betrayals the Nephilim have ever known is revealed, Clary, Jace, Isabelle, Simon, and Alec must flee – even if their journey takes them deep into the demon realms, where no Shadowhunter has set foot before, and from which no human being has ever returned…

Love will be sacrificed and lives lost in the terrible battle for the fate of the word in the thrilling final installment of the classic urban fantasy series The Mortal Instruments!

Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas

I’ve got to say, I’ve been eagerly wanting to start this novel since I finished Crown of Midnight. But I have held myself off since I wanted to reread the Lux series. But I don’t think I can hold myself off any longer! I’ve heard such great things about this book and we’re going to be introduced to so many new characters! So, on September 7th (my first day of school) you will probably find me with my nose stuck in this book.

Heir of Fire (Throne of Glass, #3)Celaena has survived deadly contests and shattering heartbreak―but at an unspeakable cost. Now, she must travel to a new land to confront her darkest truth . . . a truth about her heritage that could change her life―and her future―forever. Meanwhile, brutal and monstrous forces are gathering on the horizon, intent on enslaving her world. Will Celaena find the strength to not only fight her inner demons, but to take on the evil that is about to be unleashed?

Packed with heart-pounding action, fierce new characters, and swoon-worthy romance, this third book will enthrall readers from start to finish.

Queen of Shadows by Sarah J. Maas

And finally, I will be reading this lovely book. There was so much rave going on around this book when it first released. And now that Empire of Storms is releasing, I have to catch up! So since I once again do not know what this book is about, I will bee inserting the Goodreads Synopsis below:

Queen of Shadows (Throne of Glass, #4)The queen has returned.

Everyone Celaena Sardothien loves has been taken from her. But she’s at last returned to the empire—for vengeance, to rescue her once-glorious kingdom, and to confront the shadows of her past…

She has embraced her identity as Aelin Galathynius, Queen of Terrasen. But before she can reclaim her throne, she must fight.

She will fight for her cousin, a warrior prepared to die for her. She will fight for her friend, a young man trapped in an unspeakable prison. And she will fight for her people, enslaved to a brutal king and awaiting their lost queen’s triumphant return.

The fourth volume in the New York Times bestselling series continues Celaena’s epic journey and builds to a passionate, agonizing crescendo that might just shatter her world.
